Ideas Don’t Move the World - Action Does
You cannot think your way to success. At some point, you have to do something.
I’m an idea person, ideation is actually my top Gallup Strengths talent. But ideas alone don't move the needle. Action does.
Three years ago this month, I sat in an audience of 3,000 people and listened to James Clear share a simple truth:
If you want to do something big, start small.
At the time, I wanted to sharpen my skills so I could add more value to a broader audience. I also wanted to write a book to help emerging leaders, especially in the concrete industry, build their leadership skills.
That was when the idea of writing weekly was born. For the first few months, those articles were just for me. Then a friend asked to read them. Fast forward to today, three years later: that simple weekly habit has built a community of over 1,600 followers on LinkedIn.
I had an idea, and I took action.
My brother did the exact same thing in a totally different arena. Over eight years ago, feeling called to expand his ministry beyond the walls of his building, he looked for a way to reach people in the community. He pastors two small churches in Indiana, but he knew some people would never step foot inside a traditional church.
After a lot of prayer, and pushing past the fear of what others might think, he started heading to a local bar every Tuesday night for tacos.
Every week, he posts the same simple invitation on Facebook:
"Ever wanted to talk to a pastor, but just weren’t ready to walk into a church?
I’ll make myself available for conversation tonight at Ben’s between (at least) 4:30–6:30 PM. I’ll be drinking iced tea, the beverage of my choice. You drink the beverage of your choice.
— Pastor Bob”
Today, he has ministered to hundreds of people. He’s sat with those who are grieving, offered direction to the lost, and listened to people who had never spoken to a pastor in their lives.
He had an idea, and he took action.
Look closely at both of these stories, and you’ll see the ACT principle at work:
● Apply: Take the core idea and put it directly into practice, whether that's drafting a weekly column or pulling up a chair at a local taco night.
● Change: Allow the momentum of that small action to shift your habits, break through inertia, and transform your results over time.
● Teach: Step into a position to elevate others, sharing the lessons learned to help those around you grow.
Great ideas don't transform organizations, careers, or communities while sitting quietly on a notepad. They only create impact when you ACT.
What’s one idea you’ve been holding onto that’s waiting for you to apply it today?
ACT Reflection
A — Apply: How does this show up in my life right now? Identify one situation, relationship, or mindset where this message applies. Small awareness creates meaningful change. C — Change: What is one thing you will do differently after reading this? A shift in perspective, a new habit, or a simple decision can turn insight into action. T — Teach: Who could benefit from this lesson? Share it through a conversation, an example you set, or encouragement you offer. The best lessons grow stronger when passed on.
